Frequently asked questions from potential new members

WHAT IS THE ST ALBANS ART SOCIETY?
It is a Society for those in the St Albans and surrounding area who have an interest in and an appreciation of art in both two and three dimensional forms; those of all abilities who enjoy sketching, painting, etching, sculpture, etc - either regularly or on an occasional basis. The Society currently has a total membership of about 200 and around 80 of these exhibit their work at our annual exhibitions.

WHAT ARE THE SOCIETY'S ACTIVITIES?
The Society is based in St Albans and its main activities are:
  • A monthly meeting for members - at these an invited speaker will give an illustrated talk on an art related subject. On some occasions it will be accompanied by a practical demonstration of art techniques or materials.
  • A weekly studio session for those who wish to practise their drawing and painting skills using life or costume models.
  • A weekly outdoor sketching afternoon (summer only) for those wishing to sketch or paint local scenes.
  • One-day workshops led by invited professional artists to teach particular skills and techniques - numbers are limited and pre-booking is required.
  • Outings (two or three times a year) to art galleries and exhibitions in London and the Home Counties.
  • An annual exhibition of members' paintings and artwork - held in a prestigious location in central St Albans, usually for about ten days in the summer. There is an opportunity here for members to sell their work to the visiting public, whilst the Society benefits from a small commission.
  • Newsletters published four times a year.
  • An annual party held in the spring.
WHEN AND WHERE DO YOU MEET?
The monthly meetings and weekly studio sessions are all held at the Marlborough Pavilion, Old Oak, off Cottonmill Lane, where there is a large free car park with easy access and facilities for wheelchair users. These meetings are on Wednesdays and normally start at 7.30 pm and finish before 10.00 pm.

WHAT IS THE JOINING FEE, ANNUAL SUB AND OTHER CHARGES?
There is no joining fee. The annual subscription is due on 1st October and is currently £17.00 for full members and £8.50 for associate members. Associates are precluded from studio sessions, workshops and exhibiting but otherwise are encouraged to participate in all the other activities. An attendance charge of £2.00 is payable by guests at each monthly meeting; members going to the studio sessions are charged £1.50 per session. The outings are offered at cost and include coach travel from St Albans as well as admission charges. Individual workshop fees are quoted in our newsletters.
