About the Society
St Albans Art Society traces its roots back to 1888 when it was originally founded as the Hertfordshire Arts Society. Meetings were held in Hatfield and annual exhibitions at various centres throughout the county. Activities were dormant during the two world wars and for a few years after but in 1952 these were revived when the title became the New Hertfordshire Art Society with membership from a cross-section of St Albans people. In 1957 it took on a new lease of life under the new more appropriate name of the St Albans Art Society.

Currently the Society arranges demonstrations of media and techniques by acknowledged experts and there are studio sessions for practice in working with life, costume and portrait models. Outdoor sketching sessions in local garden settings and places of historic or architectural interest take place during the summer months, also occasional whole day demonstrations and coaching are offered. There are outings to important galleries in London and elsewhere. Exhibitions of members' works are mounted at least once each year. Newsletters are published periodically with information on current and forthcoming events.

Anyone who wishes to participate actively may join as a member. A lower rate of subscription is available to students and also to those who only attend lectures, demonstrations and social events.
